Girls’ Soccer Dominates, 6-1

Girls’ Varsity Soccer, now with a record of TK after Wednesday11-1-5, walked away from Deerfield this Saturday with a 6-1 victory. Going into the game, Choate was confident of its chances against Deerfield, but Girls’ Varsity Soccer played in a difficult environment in which the temperature dropped to 33°F and the field was unusually small.

Choate started with the ball and immediately advanced into Deerfield’s half with a long ball from a center mid. Erin Martin ’20 scored three minutes into the game with a left-foot shot from outside the goalie box, and Ava Gizzie ’23 followed with another goal about five minutes later. About eight minutes after that, Julianne Sekula ’20 continued the scoring by chipping the ball by Deerfield’s keeper off of a cross. Choate’s rapid scoring lasted throughout the entire first half, and Choate held a 5-0 lead heading into the second. Despite the many goals, Girls’ Varsity Soccer failed to finish several crosses into the box during the first half and looked to correct this issue in the second half.

Choate possessed well and played with composure, barely letting the ball enter its half throughout the entire game. Choate often used the outside players, moving the ball quickly from the defense along the flanks and playing through balls into space to the forwards. However, with ten minutes left in the second half, a Deerfield attacker slipped through Choate’s defense and managed to get a shot off, which went into the upper right-hand corner of the goal. Choate quickly responded with a goal to retain their lead of five goals at 6-1. Captain Cici Curran ’20 kept the defense organized and poised from center back. Choate was able to prevent the emotional nature of the day from affecting its play and brushed off the Deerfield crowd’s jeers.

Choate played around the opponent, and everyone on the team was able to get plenty of playing time. Girls’ Varsity Soccer also finished this weekend as the only varsity team to beat Deerfield on Saturday. The team faced Thayer Academy away in the quarter-finals of the New England post-season tournament this Wednesday TK after game.
